The nation is making significant progress in the fight against COVID-19 with the distribution of vaccines — a development that has been reflected by the job market.

As recovery proceeds, the majority of states, including Washington, are seeing a decline in unemployment insurance initial claims compared with this time last year.

According to WalletHub’s updated rankings for the “States Whose Unemployment Claims Are Recovering the Quickest,” unemployment insurance initial claims in Washington decreased by 89.61 percent for the week of April 26, 2021, compared with the same week last year. This marked the fifth-biggest decrease in the United States. Taking the lead was South Dakota, which saw a 94.15 percent decrease.

Additional findings:

  • The number of unemployment insurance initial claims in Washington for the week of April 26, 2021, compared with the same week in 2019 increased by 101.67 percent. This was the 14th-smallest increase in the United States.
  • The number of unemployment insurance initial claims in Washington in the week of April 26, 2021, compared with the start of 2020 increased by 5.95 percent. This was the 16th-smallest increase in the U.S.
