Nintendo Co. is expected to announce a new mobile game Thursday after its second quarter earnings report showed weaker-than-expected results. The announcement will be made during a press conference that won’t be live-streamed, and while we’re not sure exactly what is coming a few details have been reported about the expected game.
Nintendo has partnered with DeNA, a Japanese mobile gaming company, to create the inaugural mobile game. The title is expected to be released by the end of the year with more games becoming available by March 2017. The company has said it will use existing game characters, such as Mario and Zelda, in the mobile games, but it won’t transition existing controller games to touch screen devices.
The company has kept pretty quiet about the expansion into mobile games, but Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is reported to have said Hideki Kono, one of the lead designers behind Mario Kart, is the lead developer for the project.
The game announcement comes on the heels of the company’s quarterly earning report, which showed a slight decrease in year-over-year earnings. This is the first quarterly earnings report for the company since CEO Tatsumi Kimishima was named to the top job. Former CEO Satoru Iwata died unexpectedly in July.
