The holiday season should be a time of joy, but for many it’s a time of additional stress. Because staying organized and managing your time effectively during this time of year can be a challenge, we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you achieve better work-life balance  during the holidays.

Plan Ahead

Do you have a big deadline coming up? Job-search site Zip Recruiter suggests getting an early start on end-of-year projects before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season sets in. The sooner you can clear that big project off your plate, the easier it will be to make time for family and friends later in the season.

Make a List

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your impending workload paired with the pressure of the holidays, the website Lifehack recommends making two checklists: one for work, and one for life. Prioritize big projects and must-do’s first, then chip away at less important tasks as time allows.

Take Time for Yourself

It may seem counterproductive, but the more jam-packed your schedule is, the more important it is to take time out for yourself. Company-review and job-search site Glassdoor recommends adding an extra workout to your week. Not only does exercise help reduce stress levels, but it also will give you an extra boost of energy for this busy time of year. What’s more, with all the extra calories you burn, you won’t have to stress over treating yourself to a second helping of pumpkin pie.

Work from Home

We all know how bad Eastside traffic is. If your job allows you the flexibility to work from home, ZipRecruiter recommends using the time you would have spent commuting to and from work to get some holiday to-do’s crossed off your list.

Consider Skipping the Mall

The internet makes holiday shopping a breeze. Glassdoor suggests filling your virtual shopping cart with gifts for your family and friends and making your purchases from the comfort of your couch. Not only will you save time skipping the lines, but you also will avoid the stress that comes with navigating jam-packed parking lots and crowded department stores. Or if, as many do, you crave the personal service you can only receive from shopping in person, try to do so during off hours.

It’s OK to Say ‘No’

Even if you’re the kind of employee who always is eager to jump in and lend a helping hand at work, ZipRecruiter says during the holidays it’s OK to say no to extra projects. If you have family visiting from out of town and other obligations outside work that you don’t want to miss, let your supervisor know that you don’t have time to take on any extra work until after the new year.
