Whether consumers know the name Funko or not, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know the products the Everett-based company sells.
Funko obtains licenses of pop culture personalities and characters — like Marty McFly, Mulder and Skully, Dale Cooper, Mickey Mouse, and even Bernie Sanders — and produces downright adorable figurines that come in many sizes and shapes. The most popular of its products are the Funko Pop! Vinyl figures, Dorbz, plush toys, and more, which can be spotted just about anywhere these days from office desks to children’s toy boxes.
Recently, the leading pop culture consumer products company opened its first retail store, which is located on the ground floor of the company’s new headquarters located at 2802 Wetmore Avenue in Everett.
The 17,000-square-foot retail space is just as fun, colorful, grand, and zany as Funko fans have come to expect from the brand. Guests can venture into Gotham City and sit in the Batmobile with the masked vigilante, immerse themselves in the wizarding world of Harry Potter, wander through a Disney-style enchanted forest, or check out one of the other themed rooms.
Elsewhere in the 90,000-square-foot building, Funko plans to augment its existing staff and ultimately employ as many as 300 workers in fields like art, marketing, sales, finance, information technology, human resources, operations, and legal.
“We set out to create a pop-culture hub in Everett that not only will support our future growth but that will inspire our team and our amazing Funko fans, and that’s exactly what we’ve accomplished today,” said Brian Mariotti, CEO of Funko, during the grand opening on Aug. 19. “I’m thrilled to finally unveil this project, which is a love letter to the unique phenomenon that is the fandom of Funko.”
Shoppers can visit the Funko store during its normal business hours.. In the future, Funko plans to feature a newly designed Pop! Factory, which will enable visitors to build their own custom Pop! vinyl figures, as well as Funko University, an area of the store dedicated to teaching and mentoring young students in the skills of drawing, sculpting, and toy design.
