Not sure how to ask your boss for a raise or quiet your chatty coworker? Etiquette expert Arden Clise is here to answer your awkward workplace questions.
Q: I forgot I have a meeting with an upper executive today, and I’m completely underdressed. What do I do?
A: When you’re underdressed for a more-formal meeting, it’s best to address it so that those you’re meeting with don’t question your professionalism. You should apologize for your casual attire and state you weren’t expecting to have the meeting that day. Don’t make a big deal about it: Just give your apology, the reason for being dressed casually, and move on.
To avoid this happening in the future, always keep a jacket or dressy sweater and even a pair of dress pants at the office. That way, you can easily dress up a casual outfit for those unplanned formal meetings.
