A: Sometimes when co-workers and bosses don’t have children, they don’t understand the challenges of child care, especially for a single parent. It’s wonderful your boss is OK with your daughter being at your office. However, because your co-workers seem uncomfortable with the situation, I suggest you have a conversation with them. Call them into a meeting, or meet one-on-one with each one, and explain your situation. Tell them that as a single parent, you can’t rely on a partner to help with child care. Therefore, there are times when your daughter’s school is closed or you’re working late and you have no other place for her to go. But, state you are just as committed to your job and being an equal contributor whether she is at work or not. Invite them to let you know whether she is bothering them in any way. Make sure she has plenty of toys, books, and activities to keep her occupied.
