Bellevue-based Aegis Living opened its latest senior assisted living and memory care community today.
It’s the first one in company history to fully focus on the scientific benefits of biophilia and humans’ connection to nature, bringing elements of the outdoors inside to improve residents’ physical and emotional wellbeing.
The 122-unit Aegis Living Bellevue Overlake is located at 1845 116th Ave. NE, near Overlake Medical Center.
“We are delighted to open a community that is rooted in nature, bringing the outdoors in and creating an oasis in the city, particularly coming out of a year when the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated just how important home is,” Aegis Living founder, CEO, and chairman Dwayne Clark said in a news release. “We believe our elders fully deserve, and can benefit from, more focused attention to their physical, emotional, and mental wellness — and biophilic design is one key to do this daily.”
Aegis Living Bellevue Overlake’s design was inspired by the Pacific Northwest’s beauty. The outdoor feel begins in the lobby, which houses a glass solarium full of natural wood, 6-foot palms, a waterfall, and a koi pond. These biophilic design elements extend throughout the community’s varied spaces down to details such as flooring, furnishings, and fixtures, the release says.
To complement the biophilic design, Aegis also is piloting a new wellness program that takes a proactive approach to physical, emotional, and mental wellness, using science and medical research to inform care. The pilot will inform an eventual companywide wellness program, the release said.
A second pilot is planned for Aegis’ Kirkland Waterfront community that opens this summer. The company aims to release more details on the wellness program later this year.
