Eastside businesses can help make the holiday season bright for local families in need through Youth Eastside Service’s (YES) annual Adopt-a-Family program.

Eastside businesses can support local families in need through Youth Eastside Service’s seasonal Adopt-a-Family program.

Through the Adopt-a-Family program, businesses can sponsor one or more families by donating gift cards families can use to purchase gifts, food, and other household items.

Patti Skelton-McGougan, executive director for YES, said the organization supports families in need year-round, but the holiday season is an extra special time to give back. “(The holidays) are a very hard time for families in need,” she said. “To bring joy to them, where the parents don’t have to stress about how to get gifts or food, allows them to have a meaningful holiday. It really helps.”

Businesses interested in sponsoring one or more families can sign up now through Nov. 25 by filling out the online form on YES’ website. Once completed, businesses have until Dec. 16 to mail or drop off gift cards to YES’ Bellevue location.

A spokesperson for First Rate Insurance Plus in Kirkland, an Adopt-a-Family sponsor, said, “We feel it is not only our duty to give back, but our honor to give back to the community we live and raise our children in. We chose YES because we believe in their mission and focus on the family.”

Last year, local businesses supported 50 Eastside families through the Adopt-a-Family program. Currently, there are still 17 families and 26 kids in need of sponsors. According to YES, many of these families are single-child households, meaning a $100 donation is all it would take to extend a little holiday cheer.
