The Society of American Business Editors and Writers announced Thursday that 425 Business is the Finalist (second-place winner) for the Print Magazine General Excellence award in Division 1 in its 21st annual Best in Business Awards competition. Nearly 900 entries from 175 news outlets were submitted across 71 categories for this year’s contest. Only 116 entries were selected for first- and second- place honors.

425Business_Oct15_Cover_LowresThis comes as big news to 425 Business. The monthly magazine launched in October 2014, and had published only 18 issues at the time of the award. The magazine relies on a small but dedicated team to report the stories of Eastside business owners, the economy, and the developing startup community unique to this side of Lake Washington.

“To finish second in a national competition staged by an organization as respected as the Society of American Business Editors and Writers is a major accomplishment under any circumstances,” said Editor in Chief Jeff Burlingame. “But to win such an honor with submissions that came from our first full year in existence is almost mind-blowing. All the props go to our creative, talented, and hard-working staff.”

SABEW contest judges were impressed with 425 Business’ design, photographs, and broad range of coverage. Some of the judges’ comments:

425 Business takes an old-school magazine model and makes it as hip as the Puget Sound people it covers. The engaging design is generously decorated with arresting photos that capture the sense of vibrancy and innovation of the people who work in its Washington state home turf. While 425 Business is service-oriented, it’s not afraid to deal with touchy subjects such as why women and minorities get treated so badly and how the newly legalized weed business is faring.”

Bloomberg led this year’s competition with seven honors, while The New York Times earned six honors. Other winners include, The Wall Street Journal, Newsday, ProPublica, NPR, and more.

First place in 425 Business‘ category was awarded to D CEO, a monthly business publication in Dallas. Award winners will be honored at the conclusion of the SABEW conference in Washington, D.C. on May 21.
